Envelope Wingback

The Envelope Wingback takes its name from Howard Hodgkin’s description of the light in his studio - flat, even, and shadowless, wrapping itself around him like an envelope. It draws on the measured proportions of an 18th-century wingback, with a high, structured back and precisely tailored arms that offer a quiet sense of enclosure. This classical foundation is balanced by minimal ornament and clean, architectural lines, lending the piece a modern clarity while reinterpreting the type with restraint and intent.

Handmade in England using traditional upholstery techniques, the frame is crafted from seasoned hardwood, while hand-stitched horsehair padding ensures resilience and longevity.

A squab seat cushion, generously filled with Irish feather and down, rests within a crisp, structured profile - its quiet elegance enhanced by an economy of detail, free from piping. Raised on stained walnut legs with bevelled corners and sweeping rear sabre legs, the Envelope is at once formal and inviting, a distilled expression of comfort and form.
